Welcome to the British School at Rome’s Fine Arts Archive. This site introduces the networks of people and ideas that emerged with the establishment of the Rome Prizes for Decorative Painting, Engraving, Sculpture and Architecture from 1913 up until 1930. The visiting award-holding artists and scholars left materials, artworks and correspondence in the BSR’s archive. Photographs, letters, sketches, prints, objects and ephemera hint at an explosion of artistic and research activity in the early years of the School and provide insights into a pivotal moment in European cultural history. This site traces the networks of people and stories contained in this archive.
