What is in the British School at Rome Fine Arts Archive?

Welcome to the British School at Rome’s Fine Arts Archive. This site introduces the networks of people and ideas that emerged with the establishment of the Rome Prizes for Decorative Painting, Engraving, Sculpture and Architecture from 1913 up until 1930. The visiting award-holding artists and scholars left materials, artworks and correspondence in the BSR’s archive. Photographs, letters, sketches, prints, objects and ephemera hint at an explosion of artistic and research activity in the early years of the School and provide insights into a pivotal moment in European cultural history. This site traces the networks of people and stories contained in this archive.

We encourage further research and enquiries about other periods and themes found in the archive. If you have further information or material to provide, or an enquiry, please get in touch with the BSR archive.

Unlocking the Fine Arts Archive is a project designed and written by three researchers from the Collaboration Labs Knowledge Exchange Programme: Dr Peter Buckles, Ksenia Litvinenko and Dr Nia Davies in collaboration with the British School at Rome. Collaboration Labs is supported by ESRC NPIF Accelerating Business Collaboration scheme.
